本诗是一首为儿童写的圣诗，要阐明的是“耶稣为何死”的道理。作者艾西西（Cecil F. Alexander,1818-1895）出生在爱尔兰，父亲是皇家海军少校，也是当地的地主和政府代表。 她在1850年嫁给教区的副主教亚历山大牧师。教友1500多人分居在数英里的沼泽地与山谷；无论寒暑，她常要在这贫脊的荒地中走几里路以协助她丈夫探望教友。 她欣赏大自然的美景，也是一位勤勉的主妇，利用家中后院的每一空隙，种植花草、蔬菜，及饲养家畜。
