“我心灵，得安宁”这首诗歌常用于基督徒丧礼。作词者是史派福（Horatio G. Spafford），他是个很成功、为人所羡慕的律师，同时也是个很虔诚的基督徒。然而就在1871年的芝加哥大火发生的前几个月，史派福在密西根湖畔大量投资在房地产上。就这样，他的投资全毁于这次的大灾难里！接着，他本希望让他的太太与四个女儿能好好地休息，而且他也希望能帮助一些教会活动，便安排他的家人在1873年11月来一趟欧洲之旅。他在出发前一刻，因为业务上的需要而必须留下来，于是他只好送他太太与四个女儿依原订的船期，登上汽船前往欧洲；而他自己则预计在几天之后，处理完相关业务，再前往欧洲与妻女会合。但是，在11月22日，这一艘由美国前往欧洲的船，被另一艘英国轮船撞上，在短短的12分钟里就沉没了！几天之后，海难的生还者终于在韦尔斯的卡迪夫（Cardiff, Wales）登岸；史派福太太给她先生发了一封电报：“只有自己获救（Saved alone）”！史派福随即乘船前去与他挚爱的妻子会合，当他搭船来到他四个女儿溺毙的海域附近时，他写下了这一段描述他自己内心深沉悲恸的歌词：“忧伤来似浪滚！（When sorrows like sea billows roll……）”
史派福写的这一首歌曲，并没有只停留在人生的悲哀与苦难的主题上，反而是着重于第三段歌词的“基督的救赎大功”，第四段歌词的“盼望基督第二次荣耀的再来”！由一般的人性来看，像史派福这样经历了失去四个女儿的惨痛悲剧之后，还可以写出如此明确的宣告：“我心灵，得安宁（It is well with my soul）”，实在是奇迹！
