诗歌背景资料：
《夜半歌声歌》首见于1849年12月29日美国《美国基督教正报》。当年美国政局动荡，人心不稳（12年后即爆发南北战争）赛阿斯这首歌提到“地上平安人增友谊”（参路加福音2:14），无疑反映他对美好将来的冀盼。
赛阿斯，据称是17世纪第一代清教徒移民（美国开国祖宗）之后，1810年4月6日生于美国麻省桑迪田，半生事奉不离麻省。1837年肄业于哈佛神学院，其后牧养过几家神体一位论教会——有人以为赛阿斯既是神体一位论者，必然否定耶稣基督与圣灵的神性，但从《夜半歌声歌》所见，赛阿斯对耶稣诞生，天使报信那深情细腻的描述，实在叫人怀疑他是否彻头彻尾的神体一位论者。事实上，赛阿斯死后不久，他的一本遗作出版，里面有这么一句话：“我从小接受虽然是神体一位论教育，但我也相信，也传讲基督的神性。”在赛阿斯的世代，人人认为前景堪虞，但赛阿斯深信否极泰来。他凭信心的眼睛看见将来的“黄金时代”：

《基督教正报》编辑莫里森说：“我常这样想：‘不论我的圣诞日讲道信息如何不济，只要会众念了、唱了《夜半歌声格》，即可弥补一切。’”
