诗歌背景资料：
泰特（1652-1715）与华兹同代，他对英国教会最大的贡献，是与爱尔兰同乡布雷迪为英语诗篇创作新乐律，好配合当世文风。泰特、布雷迪合编的诗篇本在1696年出版，名为《大卫诗篇新本》。这诗篇本后来获得英王威廉三世颁为英语诗篇钦定本，从而取代1562年出版，史坦豪、霍金斯合编的《诗篇通本》。《大卫诗篇新本》和任何新诗本一样，出版初期受尽冷言冷语，但它至终经得起时间考验，成为英美两地圣公会的标准诗篇本。
泰特除了写乐律，也写圣诗。《大卫诗篇新本》出版不久就补编，共有16首新收录的圣诗，《牧人闻信歌》是补编第11首圣诗。
泰特，1652年生于爱尔兰都柏林，教士之子，受业于都柏林大学。他后来迁居伦敦，从事剧本创作，以改编伊丽莎白时代剧本著称，曾为菩赛尔的歌剧《黛多与伊尼埃斯》写歌词。1702年，四十岁的泰特获封为桂冠诗人——可惜根据祖瑞安在《圣诗学全书》记述，泰特一生挥霍无度，晚年要躲在伦敦避债，最后郁郁而终。
